3 Tips to Care for Composite Decking in the Winter

As the weather gets colder, you may be wondering what you need to do to care for your composite decking. Here are three tips to help you keep your deck in great shape all winter long. With just a little bit of effort, you can enjoy your deck for many years to come.

Make sure your composite decking stays clean in the winter.

Winter can be a challenging time for gardens. Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule during the winter months will ensure your composite decking performs at its best. As a rule of thumb, sweep the deck at least once or twice a week to prevent leaves, nuts, and other debris from building up on the surface. Taking good care of your composite deck will ensure that it looks great throughout the winter season.

In snowy areas, shovel your decking and remove any ice that may have formed.

Living in a snowy location can present some unique issues for homeowners. It’s necessary to keep in mind to remove snow off your decking with a plastic shovel (rather than a metal shovel) whenever practicable, since this can help lessen the danger of harm caused by slipping or falling. Performing this easy task every few days during heavy snowfall is an efficient way to ensure that your outdoor decks remain safe and structurally strong for years to come.

To melt ice on composite decking, do not use rock salt.

Using rock salt to melt ice on composite decking is not recommended because it can damage the surface of the decking. Rock salt is a coarse, crystalline substance that can scratch the surface of composite decking when it is applied. It is better to use a safer, gentler ice-melt product that is specifically designed for use on composite decking. Salts like traditional table salt and those that are calcium chloride based will do a great job and are also less likely to scratch the surface of the decking. As mentioned above, it is also a good idea to clear snow off of your deck regularly to prevent ice from forming in the first place. Composite decking can easily withstand the harsh winter weather, but with a few simple steps, your deck will remain in great shape all season long. Make sure to sweep the deck regularly to keep it free of debris and snow. When necessary, use a plastic shovel to remove any ice or snow from your decking. Finally, when melting ice on composite decking, be sure to use an ice-melt product specifically designed for composite decks rather than rock salt. With these three tips, you’ll be able to care for your composite decking throughout the winter season and enjoy it for years to come.
